Assessment Strategy and Evidence Requirements

Purpose of Assessment

This assessment strategy ensures that you demonstrate competence and professional capacity to facilitate workplace debriefing and reflective supervision processes that promote practitioner wellbeing, learning, and professional accountability.

It combines assessment for two qualifications:

Assessment Overview

Assessment for this unit is holistic, practical, and workplace-based.

Evidence is drawn primarily from your real practice, supported by reflective analysis and third-party verification. You will complete learning activities in the course and in group supervision circles, and gather authentic workplace evidence for the final assessment.

Assessment Components

Assessment Task Purpose Evidence Type
1. Knowledge Assessment Demonstrates understanding of supervision, debriefing, and emotional support processes. Online quiz or written short-answer questions covering theory, ethics, and organisational policy.
2. Case Study Analysis Apply supervision and debriefing models (Tripod, Feedback Sandwich, Seven-Eyed, Kolb, Gibbs) to realistic FDR scenarios. Written response linking course models to practice scenarios
3. Workplace Debriefing and Support Evidence Demonstrates your ability to facilitate structured debriefing and ongoing worker support processes in practice after stressful or challenging incidents. Workplace documentation (session notes, plans, referral records, participant confirmation, supervisor verification, reflective summaries).
4. Reflective Supervision Session Evidence Demonstrates your ability to facilitate structured reflective supervision sessions using the Tripod method (Learning, Accountability, Wellbeing). Workplace evidence (session notes, participant confirmation, supervisor verification, reflective summaries)
5. Reflective Journal Entries (x3) Demonstrates integration of theory with practice and reflective insight. Uploaded reflective journal templates.
6. Professional Development Plan Consolidates learning and identifies future supervision goals. Final plan outlining strengths, challenges, and continuing development goals.
7. Final Portfolio of Competence Brings together all workplace and written evidence demonstrating competency in the unit. Workplace evidence, reflections, and third-party verification combined into a single submission.

Assessment Types and Evidence Requirements

To be deemed competent, you must show that you have:

  • Provided ongoing support to at least 2 different workers to monitor and address stress and emotional wellbeing
  • Facilitated at least 1 structured debriefing session following an incident involving stress or emotional demand
  • Identified workers requiring additional support and referred them appropriately

These can be evidenced through Workplace Debriefing Evidence and/or Reflective Supervision Session Evidence, provided they clearly meet the intent of the performance criteria.

For the Mediation Institute Certificate, you must additionally demonstrate that you can:

  • Facilitate at least three reflective supervision sessions using the Tripod Model
  • Balance the formative (learning), normative (accountability), and restorative (wellbeing) functions of supervision
  • Maintain clear ethical boundaries and confidentiality
  • Document reflections and outcomes professionally

These sessions can overlap with your debriefing evidence if they demonstrate both wellbeing and reflective learning components.

Tip: If you do not currently have access to supervision sessions in your role, you may conduct sessions with colleagues or volunteers. Mediation Institute can assist you with provision of volunteer supervisees if necessary.

You must show understanding of:

  • Debriefing techniques, crisis intervention, and stress management
  • Organisational policies, procedures, and referral processes
  • Legal and ethical frameworks for supervision, in the FDR or Mediation context
  • Professional boundaries and self-care
  • Reflective models and supervision theories (Tripod, Kolb, Gibbs, Seven-Eyed)
  • Indicators of significant stress or burnout and appropriate responses
  • Internal/external support options (e.g., EAP, peer supervision, mental health professional referral)

Formative activities include:

  • Group Supervision Circles – practice facilitation and reflection
  • Feedback Clinics – receive developmental feedback using the Feedback Sandwich model
  • Peer Discussions – explore ethical scenarios and wellbeing issues

These sessions are not assessed but provide rehearsal for your workplace evidence.
